The main difference I can see in VNX-i is it does not contain any edit engine, unlike VNX-2. So if you don't have CNX-D installed you won't be able to edit any photos, it will only act as a file browser where you can sort or label images.
Therefore, you are able to browse images previously edited in CNX-2 and if you click on the edit button, it witches to CNX-D where you are able to adjust the image. Of course any U-Points will be ignored,

Just check that out. View NXi opens Capture when you use the Edit button, and then Capture states it cannot open a file in Nikon RAW format. Gosh, is this really happening :-

No problem for me on OSx 10.9.4 .. though I don't see how it's going to usurp PhotoMechanic (and from there to LR).

Yes.
You seem to be able to add several other programs to the 'Open With' dialogue
I just added Photoshop, Lightroom, and Nikon Capture NX2
I am keeping a compressed copy of View NX2 for now - just in case. (Downloaded from the Nikon site).

what does it do better than the old version? (i.e. what am I getting in exchange for giving up basic editing iin the old package?) I don't use any other Nikon software, and probably never will..

So if I understand this correctly, ViewNX-i has LESS functionality than ViewNX2. Stripped is the ability to do basic edits.
If true, I'll stick with ViewNX2 but it's going to suck awfully fast if I get a new camera and ViewNX2 does not support it.

Hey Danner, make sure you have installed Capture NX-D version 1.2.0, the error you are seeing happens with version 1.1.0 of CNX-D.
I am not a software developer but it seems to me that it would be simple enough for the installer of View NX-i to check which version of CNX-D is installed and warn the user to upgrade to v. 1.2.0. Seems like an oversight to me.

wanted to reinstall Nikon ViewNX 2 (I want to use Nikon Transfer 2 as part of that package; yes, I DO use Photos but prefer the 'Nikon Transfer 2' for some jobs). I downloaded from official web site (http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/20.html). Install hangs at 2nd to last step ('Additional Installation').
