Parental Controls Windows 10

This article explains how to block websites or filter website content in Firefox that may be offensive or inappropriate for children.

Firefox checks the parental controls on your computer and sets itself to Prefer:Safe mode. This automatically turns on the safety feature on each website your child visits, as long as you have the parental controls active on your computer.

This feature can be turned off only through your password-protected parental settings on your operating system, so your child will not be able to deactivate this feature through the browser.

To turn on parental controls on your computer, please see the support documentation for your operating system or see the following instructions.

  • Set up family features on Windows 10 at microsoft.com
  • (Windows 7): How To Use Parental Controls in Windows 7 at howtogeek.com and Safeguarding Windows 7 – Parental Controls at microsoft.com

Built-in Parental Controls let you block websites or filter website content in Firefox or any other browser.

  • Set up parental controls on Mac at apple.com

Windows XP doesn't have built-in parental controls. For such a feature, you can download Windows Live Essentials for Windows XP at microsoft.com containing Windows Live Family Safety, a web filtering software.

For a list of web filtering software, see List of content-control software at wikipedia.org.

This addons.mozilla.org search for parental control lists several extensions that can provide content blocking.

Note: Extensions can be easily disabled by a knowledgeable user and don't work in other browsers.

Based on information from Parental controls (mozillaZine KB)

Web restrictions work well for my kiddos' iphones. We use the disney circle at home, with the disney circle GO! product to provide filtering when not at home. (we also use restrictions to turn off Safari and only allow apps we know to be installed, otherwise the app store is off. We're pretty draconian parents. But that's not important right now)

Parental Controls On Youtube

Turning on personal hotspot on a phone with data effectively bypasses *everything*. So kid 2 has a phone with no data but a browser. Kid 1 has an iphone that has browser locked and web restrictions on, but is allowed to have data so he can play Pokemon Go, read certain wiki apps, and use iMessage.

Kid 1 turns on personal hotspot, kid2 connects his phone (or laptop, or whatever) through it and volia! Unfettered internet access.

IF, however, there's a way to disable personal hotspot, the issue neatly goes away. Yes, you can still play Pokemon Go and iMessage is still enabled, but you can't be sneaky. (please, no comments on how I should trust my kids. I do, but I was once a 14yo male. full stop.)

I could disable data completely, but I'd like to allow some stuff.

The web restrictions and browser blocking are a great start. And I would have thought that locking cellular settings (with the personal hotspot OFF) would prevent making changes. Nope. Still allows flipping the switch regardless.
