Why did I use this? I needed to use it when a software demo messed up my password (no idea how) and left me locked out of my account.. my ONLY account. I did not have my installation disks with me and the only tip I could find about how to get in (I had to use a *gag* windows box to search) did not work in my case (it involves using SystemStartup to get things running but if you are running a web server, the startup will go into a loop when trying to load it). Without this way of getting in, I would have been in bad shape (I need my Mac for work so not getting in was not an option).
FYI.. the above hint doesn't mention it but in my case the primary account (mine) was fine after I booted in, created a new account and reset the password on my original account.

imho Setup Assistant is the thing that configures server's TCP/IP initially.. so if the assitant is not done, the TCP is not configured -> you cannot SHH, telnet into the box.??

Actually, if you look in the Apple Menu while going through the Assistant, you will see the Preferences.. Then, if you know what you are doing, it is not that difficult to set the prefs right, telnet (or ssh) in, mark the Assistant as done, and then kill the Assistant or reboot from the terminal (to prevent the Assistant from removing the file).

I know people that need to go through the setup assistant because of information they have entered in error.
If all you want is to run the Setup assistant again boot to single user mode(command+'S')
cd /var/db
rm -r .AppleSetupDone
cd netinfo
mv -f local.nidb local.nidb.old
reboot
This will run the setup assistant but not overwrite the existing User's Home Dir. files nor delete the User.
