'..you can now read and send Hotmail with the built-in Mail.app in OS X.'
Just to clarify.. you can only receive email, you cannot send it using POP3 access with a free hotmail account. I used to use freepops to have access to my Hotmail accounts in Mail, but I've been using the method posted above for about a month now. It works rather well, just can't send emails which is no biggie to me. That's what my real email account is for ..gmail! ;)

I have a free MSN account email (essentially hotmail) and I can send via POP3, all I had to do was enable authentication on the smtp portion of the account setup.
That said, sending is wicked slow, but it sent a test email from my hotmail to my gmail.

Sweet!! It is REALLY slow, but it does work like you said! Thanx for the tip!!

Rather than using POP3 directly in Mail.app, I suggest getting a Gmail account and then telling Gmail to pick up your hotmail email via POP3. Then add the Gmail account in Mail.app. You'll get full access to your hotmail, but with much more functionality.
There are two main benefits to this setup: vastly superior spam filtering, and IMAP access to all your email.

That might be the part where the 'old enough' account become relevant..
I know that not everybody can use the forwarding option on their Hotmail account..

It isn't forwarding. Gmail can be set up to log in to hotmail via POP3, exactly the same way that any email client app would.

Instructions for Gmail's Mail Fetcher function are available at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=21288.

You might want to check on the Advance Tab to make sure Incoming mail port is set to 995 and the Outgoing mail port to 25.
Also make sure 'this server required a secure connection' is check.
But I think only 'old enough' accounts can use this feature. There has been a lot of debates about that. Although, mine is 8 years old so I can't confirm. It's simply working on my Mail client.
(Who could have though that I would says that for a MS service)!

According to Microsoft, it is available to all hotmail users.

Has anyone been able to delete messages from hotmail online?

I have a hotmail account that I am able to download to Mail and read messages, but when I delete or read messages in Mail, their status is not modified online, and messages are not deleted from Hotmail online.
Is there anyway to fix this?

Has anyone been able to delete messages from hotmail online?

It is because you are using POP, if you we're using IMAP it would bodify online too. POP is more secure because you may delete imporant mail that you have to keep, you can access it online. So if you want to let this work, you have to find a IMAP way.

I just tried to add my Hotmail account on iPhone and it did work automatically. I can check my account just like gMail!
Not that I use my Hotmail account that frequently but seems like Microsoft finally realizing what they have been missed out! I can't believe they wanted to charge people for this!

Hey folks.
Here's a working solution I found.
Simply go to settings on your iphone
Go to settings, create a new mail account.
Enter your basic information
NAME
USER NAME xyz@live.ca or live.com
YOUR PASSOWRD *******
Description xyz account
Now in the next page,
POP account information
NAME aosindason
Address xyz@live.ca or xyz@ live.com
Description aosidnoasin
HOST NAME(Incoming mail server) POP3.LIVE.COM
USERNAME xyz@live.ca or xyz@live.com {specify the email! wont work with just the username!)
PASSWORD *****
Out going mail server is SMTP.live.com
No need to add username and password here!
save it- it will ask you 'wana proceed without ssl?' SAy no, then save , save again.
Then go to outgoing mail server>primary server> SSL ON check port , it must be 587>DONE
Then go to advanced >incoming settings> SSL ON> server port 995
That's it!-
Your are done!
Remember key things,
SSL must be on for both servers, ports as specified above for all live.com and live.ca accounts. It must work!
Cheers,
shounak deshpande

I've followed the directions exactly but I can't get Hotmail to work.
Is there anything that needs to be done at Hotmail's end?

Make sure that the incoming mail is not only the correct server, pop3.live.com but also the correct port, 995. And make sure to use a secure server connection.
If you want to send mail from this account make sure that the smtp (outgoing) server is smtp.live.com and the port is 25 and that you enable authentication with your user name (email address) and password.

Many thanks for the extra tips. Powerpc emulator for el capitan. Mail now seamless. Perfect.

Do you still get webmail access? What is the behavior? I know that webmail access would still be important. Really, I want IMAP at hotmail, but I think there are setting that make POP more bearable. Any tips welcomed.

Yes, you still have web access. If you want IMAP, follow my advice above about using Gmail.
Gmail will use the POP3 access to retrieve all your hotmail on a regular basis, so it will always be up to date, and you will then be able to take advantage of Gmail's IMAP support.
You can even set Gmail up to send email using your hotmail address, so that everything looks the same to everyone else.

What POP3 settings do you use for Mail.app and Gmail? Do you leave mail on server? When does it get deleted? If you don't leave them on server, does that removed them from the hotmail webmail interface? Knowing that Gmail is an option too, I'm wondering what the closest POP3 settings are for IMAP-like behavior on Hotmail.

This hint partially worked for me :
I set up a new mail account in Mail.app and I have been able to retreive only a few messages (like less than ten of the oldests) and since then it checks the account but doesn't retreive anything although I still have messages in my hotmail mailbox.
For information, my email address ends with '@msn.com'.
Do you have any idea that could help ?

Apple's straightening out Mail problems with Yosemite, plus making it easier to attach big files

If there's one singularly weak spot in Mavericks, it's Apple's Mail app. It a mess, especially for Gmail users, and every Mavericks update has sought to fix it somehow. What's so incredibly frustrating is that Mail was, for the most part, solid in Mountain Lion. Mavericks Mail's many faults has left some users apoplectic, while others have gone to third-party mail clients in search of a better experience. Fortunately, Apple seems to have gotten the message, because Mail in OS X Yosemite is better.

Back to the fundamentals

Apple hasn't apologized for how much of a disaster Mail is in Mavericks, but the message was apparent at the WWDC 2014 keynote.

'..we really focused on the basics,' said Apple SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi at the WWDC keynote. 'Reliable syncing, fast switching between mailboxes, quick fetches of your new mail, the basics.'

In other words, everything that Mavericks Mail managed to screw up. Thank goodness.

I'll reserve final judgment for the general release later this year, but I will say that Yosemite Mail is snappier than before and less prone to many of the problems I'm accustomed to in Mavericks, so on balance I'd say it's a welcome change.

Improved interface

Like other Apple applications in Yosemite, Mail has gotten a facelift to conform to the Yosemite look and feel. Typography is clearer, with translucency added to the Mailboxes sidebar.

There aren't any major changes to Mail's layout in this new release, just some enhancements here and there for clarity and simplicity. You'll now see a round profile image appear to the right of the sender's e-mail address. If no profile image is available, Mail displays their initials instead.

Markup

Mail has always made it easy to attach documents, but Apple's taking it one step further by introducing a new feature in Yosemite called Markup. Markup makes it possible to do exactly that — mark up the files you attach in mail.

What's more, Markup sports a magnifying loupe, so you can draw attention to a specific portion of the attached document by zooming in. You can also draw shapes like arrows, and circles, which Markup will automatically try to straighten and neaten up. You also have the ability to draw shapes and add text annotations, and fill out PDF file attachments, complete with signature.

Markup isn't doing anything that you can't do already with apps like Napkin or Skitch, which may leave some concerned that Apple is once again pushing out third party developers with this new feature. But Napkin and Skitch are standalone apps that enable you to mark up images. Markup is embedded as a feature of Mail, which limits its overall utility as a markup tool.

Mail Drop

One of the biggest pain points with mail use is attaching files. Internet service providers and e-mail providers often put restrictions on the maximum size of file attachments to keep their servers from getting clogged up with pictures of people's kids and videos of graduation processions. Apple's doing something about that with a new OS X Yosemite Mail feature called Mail Drop.

Update

Mail Drop shunts off the collection and retrieval of file attachments to iCloud, making it possible to attach much larger files than you ever could before — up to 5 GB at a whack.

Hotmail Settings For Mac Mail Yosemite Download

As far as other Apple Mail users are concerned, it's business as usual: Apple's made the process transparent, so you'll still see the file enclosure attached just like you always have.

But if you're using a different Mail client, or if you're on a PC or another computer, you'll see the attachment as a text link. Clicking on it will then retrieve the file.

The bottom line

Even if Apple only makes good on the promise of improving Yosemite Mail's 'fundamentals,' they'll give plenty of reason for Mavericks users to celebrate. The new features like Markup and Mail Drop are certainly going to make many Mail users' lives easier, too.
