This page provides compatibility information and support hints for the CEDMagic RCA VideoDisc Collector's Guide CD-ROM.

I work on a iMac, system macOS Mojave 10.14.6 with a 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 Processsor. Having problems burning DVDs and Blu-Rays with latest update. Compressor can not find Burner. Want to try new DVD Burner, will this one work? I have a DVD player, using TV, so do not really need player. Apr 26, 2007 making it read faster won't increase your rig's performance in games and such if that's what you're aiming at. Anyways, if you have nero you can try to use their drivespeed to select that read speeds you want. When hard-drive disaster strikes, you need to start up your Mac from another drive to repair it. But, which drive? Take a few minutes now to prepare for emergencies. Look for Piglet's Big Game on hybrid CD-ROM for Mac OS and Windows for US$19.99. System requirements call for a G3/300MHz or faster; Mac OS 9.0 or Mac OS X; 64MB RAM; 128MB hard disk space. The speed of a CD-ROM drive is described as a multiple of the speed of an audio CD: '2x' means twice as fast, '8X' eight times as fast, etc. For many older Macs, an older or slower CD-ROM drive is adequate; many of these Macs do not have the performance or features to take advantage of faster CD-ROM drives.

Operating System Compatibility:

The CEDMagic CD-ROM is a hybrid ISO 9660 and HFS disc supporting the Macintosh, UNIX, and Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP/Vista/7/8 operating systems, and should work with other operating systems that support 31 character or longer file names and the Joliet Specification.

In late 2002, DVD players began to enter the market with firmware capable of playing CD's containing JPG images like the CEDMagic CD-ROM. Some players limit the number of JPEG's to 500 per disc, while others have a limitation well in excess of the thousands of images on the CD-ROM. Consult your owner's manual or the DVDR Help site to determine if a specific DVD player model is JPG-compatible, or simply pop the CD into your DVD player to see what it displays on the attached television set.

The CD-ROM has been tested with both the 'A' and 'B' releases of Windows 95 as well as Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7/8. The disc was also tested on Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00, and requires a version of NT later than 3.51 for Joliet compliance. Note that the CD-ROM is not supported with Windows 3.x (or DOS for that matter). Although the disc may initially appear to work with Windows 3.x, this operating system cannot recognize long file names. So in directories that contain files with the first eight characters of the name identical, Windows 3.x will simply load the first file it encounters, which may not be the correct one.

Mac OS X is Apple's operating system released in 2001 with UNIX and NeXT underpinnings. The CD-ROM is compatible with all versions of Macintosh OSX.

The CD-ROM is usable with all releases of the Classic Macintosh OS that are themselves compatible with Navigator or Explorer. This includes System 7.1 through 9.2.2.

Linux is an internet-supported variation of UNIX that can be downloaded for free or purchased inexpensively on CD-ROM. The CEDMagic disc was tested with Red Hat Linux Releases 5.2 through 9.0, which automatically support Joliet CD-ROM's. If your variation of UNIX doesn't show long file names on the CD-ROM (i.e. selectavision.html is truncated to selectav.htm), then you need to install a Joliet Patch.

FreeBSD is a variation of UNIX that can be downloaded for free. The CEDMagic disc is compatible with versions 2 through 6, provided a Joliet Patch is installed.

The BeOS is an operating system optimized for mixed digital media. The CD-ROM was found compatible with BeOS Release 4.0 and its built-in Net Positive Web Browser provided an ISO9660/Joliet driver is installed. This may be downloaded from GJ's BeOS page. BeOS Releases 4.5 through 5.0 have built-in support for the CEDMagic CD-ROM. Be, Inc. sold its assets to Palm, Inc. on November 13, 2001 essentially ending development of the operating system, although fan sites will probably exist for some time.

OS/2 was originally a joint development between IBM and Microsoft as a replacement for DOS. It was eclipsed by Windows in the marketplace after Microsoft abandoned the joint effort, but IBM continues to support OS/2. The CEDMagic CD-ROM was found to be fully compatible with OS/2 Warp Version 4 provided FixPak M5 or later is installed. IBM FixPaks contain a number of fixes, but the only one really required is the CDFS.IFS Joliet CD-ROM driver.

Web Browser Compatibility:

The CEDMagic CD-ROM is authored in HTML 3.2 and should be used with browsers supporting that or a later release of the HTML specification, which will include most browser versions since 1996.

A web browser wpresently developed for Windows and Windows Phone, with older versions compatible with Mac OS and UNIX. Windows versions later than 4.0 are recommended. The 3.x and earlier versions of Explorer do not fully implement the HTML font specification, so external links appear in the standard link color rather than the bright red color that serves as a visual indicator that the link is external. If THIS DUMMY LINK TEXT is bright red in color, you are already using a 4.x or later version. If the text is in your standard link color, you are using a 3.x or earlier version and should upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer.

A web browser released in 2004 with versions available for MacOS, Linux, Android, and Windows. This browser is made by the same organization that produces Mozilla. The CD-ROM is faster on this browser than on Navigator or Explorer.

Google's web browser released in 2008 with versions available for MacOS, iOS, Linux, Android, and Windows. Google Chrome features a rapid install and small footprint.

A Mac OS X web browser released in January 2003 for Apple to have their own in-house browser again after the abandonment of Cyberdog six years earlier. A Windows version of Safari was later released and supported for some time. This browser is based on the KHTML rendering engine and is significantly faster than Navigator or Explorer. The CEDMagic CD-ROM is fully compatible with this browser.

A web browser with versions available for MacOS, Linux/UNIX, and Windows. Versions later than 4.0 are recommended. The 3.x and earlier versions of Navigator do not fully implement the HTML font specification, so external links appear in the standard link color rather than the bright red color that serves as a visual indicator that the link is external. An open-source web browser designed for standards compliance, performance, and portability. It is compatible with the Windows, Linux, and the Mac OS X operating systems. The CD-ROM is faster on this browser than on Navigator or Explorer.

A web browser for a variety of operating systems with minimal memory and hard disk space requirements that can run on older microprocessors. The CEDMagic CD-ROM runs faster on this than on Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. On early versions of Opera the QuickTime MoviePlayer application can be associated to play the AIFF and QT movie files on the CD-ROM. Later version of Opera support these files directly.

A Macintosh web browser first released in 1999 with minimal memory and hard disk space requirements. This is the only browser that continued development for Macintoshes with 680x0 processors well into the 2000s. The CEDMagic CD-ROM runs faster on this than on Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. Early versions of this browser use the QuickTime MoviePlayer application as a helper to play the MIDI, AIFF, and QT movie files available from the CD-ROM. Later versions of iCab support these file types directly.

Camino (formerly named Chimera) is a web browser for Mac OS X that has a Cocoa user interface, and embeds the Gecko layout engine. It is intended to be a simple, small and fast browser for Mac OS X. Performance is similar to Mozilla, i.e. faster than Navigator or Explorer.

This is a Mac OS X native browser released with that new Macintosh operating system in 2001. OmniWeb uses QuickTime to play the multimedia content on the CD-ROM.

Apple dropped support for their Cyberdog browser in 1997, with Version 2.0 being the final release, but it is still a good browser for 68030, 68040, and Power PC Macintoshes with limited RAM installed. Go to the Dog Bones Page to download CyberDog 2.0 and the ancillary software OpenDoc 1.2.1 and CFM-68K Runtime Enabler that some Macs may require. Cyberdog and OpenDoc are also available on Apple's original System 8.0 CD-ROM.

Enabling the CED Caddy Images Slide Show:

As you click through the images in the Visual CED Title Database, it may become apparent that by properly positioning the mouse pointer, you can click through all the images (and start back at the first image) without ever having to move the pointer. This feature can be used to set up a slide show on your monitor that will continually cycle through all the caddy images, displaying each one for an interval you specify, like 10 seconds. All that is needed is a way to automatically click the mouse at the desired interval, a feat easily accomplished with one of the commercial or shareware macro utilities that are available. I frequently set up my computer to display such a slide show, and it generates quite a bit of interest, particularly if the show is limited to the first front side of each title, which is done by positioning the cursor over the 'Next Title' link. The back sides of the caddies are often not that impressive from a distance, but to display those as well, just position the cursor over the 'Next Side' link. The slide show looks best using the 341 x 382 pixel images with the monitor set to a resolution of 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 pixels. The slide show can be paused at any time by repositioning the mouse pointer so it clicks on an inactive part of the browser window.

The instructions below are for KeyQuencer Lite for the Macintosh and Macro Express for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP. Both of these programs are shareware, and fully functional versions can be downloaded from their home sites by clicking on the names. An alternative to using macro programs is to instead use programs specifically designed to display slide shows. See the Caddy Slide Show Download Page for more information on this.

KeyQuencer Lite for the Classic MacOS:


(1)Download KeyQuencer Lite and run the installer.

(2) Open the KeyQuencer Editor application icon; the KeyQuencer Macros window shown above will appear.

(3) In the Macro name box type 'Auto Mouse Click' then hit TAB to select the Macro key box.

(4) Select the keystroke to launch the macro by holding down the two modifier keys (in this case command and shift) while typing the letter m. This three key combination can be used to launch the macro at any time.

(5) Hit TAB once to enter the macro text box and type or paste this exact text:
Repeat ask 'Click mouserWait 10 seconds'

(6) From the File Menu select Save Suitcase.
Your KeyQuencer window should now look exactly like the screen-captured window shown above.

When launched with the keystroke command-shift-m, this macro first asks you for the number of repetitions, which would be 1,709 to display all the first sides once for 10 seconds each. To change the time interval change the number 10 in the macro text to a different number. The KeyQuencer Editor application does not need to be open for the macro to be executed, and the macro can be terminated at any time with the keystroke command-shift-return.

Macro Express for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP:


(1)Download Macro Express and install the program.

(2) Open the Macro Express icon and click through the setup screens to reach the Macro Express Editor window.

(3) From the Macros menu select Add Macro.

(4) In the Add Macro window click in the Select Hot Key Box and simultaneously hold down the keys Ctrl and Shift and M, then release all three keys. This will establish Ctrl+Shift+M as the keystroke to launch the Auto Mouse Click macro.

(5) Click on the button Enter Directly and in the Modify Directly Editor Window type or paste this exact text with no spaces after the last character:
<REP3:01:000001:000001:1709:0:01:><TDELAY:10><LCLK><ENDREP>

(6) Click the Properties Tab and in the Nickname box type 'Auto Mouse Click' then click the Save (or OK) button, which will return you to the Macro Express Editor window.

(7) Double-click the line containing the Auto Mouse Click macro. The resulting Macro Scripting Editor window should look similar to the screen captured window shown above (appearance varies slightly with different Macro Express versions).

The text you typed in step 5 set the macro to click the left mouse button 1,709 times at 10 second intervals. This is the right number to perform one complete cycle through all the first sides in the Visual CED Title Database. Both the number of mouse clicks and the time delay can be changed in the Macro Scripting Editor window. To change the number of mouse clicks, double-click the 'Repeat Start' line and change the number 1709 in the Repeat Count box (maximum is 9999). To change the time delay, double-click the 'Wait Time Delay 10 Seconds' line and change the number 10 in the Delay Time box. When running, the Auto Mouse Click macro can be halted at any time by simultaneously pressing the Scroll Lock and Pause keys at the right end of the function key row.

Drive Technical details

Brief Tech Summary

Most older Macs used SCSI hard drives until the G3 and later Macswich used IDE or ATA hard drives. Apple alsoused IDE internal hard drives in some Quadras and Performas. External hard drives are almost all SCSI, not IDE (until the much later FireWire or USB external drives.)A simple way to determine ifa drive is SCSI or IDE is to count the pins on the connector to the large flatcable; SCSI drives have 50 pins, two rows of 25, IDE drives have 40 pins,two rows of 20. Here's a picture of a SCSI hard driveand its connector. Note that all older Macs with CD-ROMS used SCSI CD-ROM drives,even the Macs which also use IDE hard drives.

Most older Macs use a DB-25 connector to external SCSI devices (primarilyhard drives): it is on the back of the computer. Many older externalSCSI devices use aSCSI-1 connector, also called a Centronic 50-pin connector.Here is a typical cable used to connect the two.

Our internal SCSI drives are compatible with most older Macs, and tested forproper startup, good operation on a Mac, and are Mac initialized (formatted).Most of our external SCSI cabinets are generally low, flat cabinets aboutten inches by ten inches and a few inches tall. Larger cabinets are available.Most of our external drive cabinets have extra AC outlets, so the externaldrive's AC power switch can also switch other AC devices.
Please note: the cabinet is just a box for the drive or CD-ROM;Many of our external SCSI cabinets are not made by Apple but it is the SCSIdrive inside which must be compatible with your Mac.

SCSI drives

A SCSI hard drive is simply a hard drive, with a SCSI interface. That interfacehas a 50-pin flat cable connector on the back of the drive. These drivesare either internal to the Mac, or they are external whichmeans the same drive is put in a case with its own power supply and then thedrive is cabled to the Mac. There is NO DIFFERENCE between the SCSI drives used externallyin an external cabinet, and SCSI drives used internally in your Mac. This is why we offerSCSI hard drives and cases together or seperately, to suit your needs for replacementor upgrade.
External SCSI drives require aSCSI cable to connect to the Mac 25-pin SCSI connector: the drive case haseither a 50-pin SCSI connector, or a 25-pin connector like the driveconnector on most Macs. Cables are available seperately. Also, many externaldrives have a SCSI ID switch to select the SCSI number of the drive withoutopening the case. Otherwise, you need to open the case and change jumperson the drive. But if you only have one SCSI device you will never need tochange its address. Some of these external drives have a fan that can also coola compact Mac when that Mac sits on it: the Mac Bottom is a good example.
A number of manufacturers made external SCSI drives for the Mac. They actuallymade the cabinets and power supplies; the hard drives themselves weremade by Segate, Quantum, Rodime, and many others. We also sell these drivesseperately: see our internal drive section. Some ofthese cabinets use the same 25-pin connector as the Mac SCSI connector;some use a 50-pin 'Centronics' like connector common to other SCSI systemsand devices. Also, some cabinetshave additional AC outlets that are switched by the drive's AC switch, so youcan turn off additional devices like a printer.

Faster Cd-rom For Macos X

Keep this in mind: almost all external SCSI drives are simply a SCSI drivein a box with power supply. ALL the electronics are in the drive, exceptwhat is needed to convert AC power to the DC power needed for the drive.Since the drive has allthe 'smarts', I can sell a case without a drive if you have an extra drive,ask for details.

IDE drives

An IDE hard drive is simply a hard drive, with an IDE interface. That interfacehas a 40-pin flat cable connector on the back of the drive. These driveswere used for internal drives by Apple on some models of Performa, Quadra, and PowerMac.They were never used in external hard drives, external drives are allSCSI based. Even the Mac models which use IDE internal IDE hard driveswill use SCSI external hard drives. IDE hard drives cannot be'converted' to SCSI drives. Check withyour system docs, Apple's Web site for your Mac model, other on-linereferences, or books to determine what is suited for your model of Mac.

CD-ROM SCSI drives

These CD-ROM drives are tested with Macs, and we include System Extensions on disketteas necessary for drives not of Apple manufacture. System 7 will include CD-ROM extentions for Apple drives; System 7.0 and 7.5.3 are available for download from Apple's Web site, check my Web pointers pagefor references. 'Internal' drives arefor those Macs which have bays for extra drives; you will need cables andpossibly some mechanical parts unless you are replacing a previously-removeddrive and those parts are still intact. 'External'drives are internal drives in cabinets with power supplies, that can be cabledto the external SCSI connector on your Mac.
Some of these drives require a caddy, which is a plastic box that youinsert the CD-ROM disk into, then the caddy goes into the drive. 'Caddyless'drives have a Macostray that pops out of the drive, you lay the CD disk ontothe tray and press a button to retract the tray into the drive.

SCSI Termination

A SCSI terminator may be used on external drives to reduce noise on the SCSI cable bus. You can get these as a small external device that connects to the 50-pin SCSI connector on an external drive.

Older hard drives can otherwise have optional terminatingresistors on them, which can be removed if more drives are added to a SCSIsystem. These terminating resistors are two or three little resistor packs withseveral (8 to 11) 'legs', located near the SCSI connector on the circuit boardof the hard drive. These are called 'SIP resistor packs', and are of a specific resistance value. If they are not there, you may have a row of little socket pins.

Newer hard drives have what is called 'active termination'. The terminationis NOT a set of resistors, it is circuitry on the drive which must be'disabled' or 'enabled' via a jumper block. There is typically a jumper positionon the drive labled 'term enable': leave the jumper ON to enable termination,OFF to disable it.

Faster cd-rom for macos download

If you use the drive as the ONLY driveon a SCSI cable (internal or external), or at the END of that cable,then the terminator on the drive must be enabled or installed. If you use thisdrive with other drives on a cable and it is NOT at the end of the cable,the terminator must be disabled or removed.

Note on Mac Plus and SCSI: Mac Plus drives must use 'passive termination'on SCSI drives. The Plus has no internal hard drive, but has a SCSI controllerand the Apple DB-25 SCSI external connector. The last device on the 'chain' of SCSI devices must have a passive or resistive termination. As noted above, these are often SIP resistor packs, which can be added or removed. The reported issues about this, range from intermittant problems to physical damage from DC power (for the active terminator).

SCSI connectors

Hard drive SCSI addressing

The SCSI address of the drive is set by three jumpers locations. A jumperis a pair of pins on which a little device is placed, typically a very smallblack cube, which shorts the two pins together. SCSI drives inside the Macare typically set at address zero, which is no jumpers. External drivesare usually at address 2 or 3 or 4. A jumper placed in the center of thethree jumpers will set the address to 2.

Many external SCSI drives have a SCSI address switch. This is usually adevice with numbers that change when you press a button. These numbers,0 through 7, are SCSI addresses. This switch must be connected to the SCSIdrive via a cable to a connector. There is no standard for this connector,different models of SCSI drives have different ways to make this connection. It may be easier to use jumpers to set the SCSI drive to one address, than toaccomodate the SCSI selector switch. For many users, they set the SCSI addressonce and forget about it, usually to address 1, 2, 3 for external drives.(Internal SCSI drives are always set to address 0.)

Do you have a SCSI accessory that tells you what devices areat what SCSI address, and does it see the drive? System 6 had a simpleone that showed a table of all SCSI devices and the CPU at address 7.Make sure of course the drive is not set to SCSI address 7!

Hard drive sounds

When you start up the hard drive, you should hear it 'spin up' and comeup to speed. After starting up, you can hear the drive 'seeking' whenit moves the drive heads back and forth. These actions occur even if the drive ispowered up without a computer connected to it. But the drive will not do further 'seeking' after powering up without a computer running it.

It may be hard to hear the drive overthe fan inside the computer. If your drive is not working, you may be able todetermine it is the problem if you don't hear the drive spin up.

CD-ROM drives information

The CD-ROM drives I sell are used, tested, and pulled from other Macs. The internaldrives are intended to be replacement drives and do not include cables,mechanical parts, and additional OS system CD-ROM extensions - I sell someof those seperately. ExternalCD-ROM drives will need a SCSI cable and generally a SCSI terminator,which we can provide at additional cost. Prices for CD-ROM drives, caddy or caddies,and trays to hold the drives are listed on my drives Web page.

Some of the older CD-ROM drives require a caddy, which is a plastic box that youinsert the CD-ROM disk into, then the caddy goes into the drive. Here's one ofthose caddy-supporting CD-ROM drives. 'Caddyless'drives have a tray that pops out of the drive, you lay the CD disk ontothe tray and it retracts into the drive.

CD-ROM caddies are priced on another page. You do not need caddies with tray-type CD-ROM drives.

Because some early Macs used CD-ROM drives with either caddies or trays, some Macs have differentcase panels or bezels, with slots of different sizes to accomodate either a caddy-drive or a tray-drive. Here's a photo of two PowerMac 7100 bezels, one for each type of CD-ROM drive.The wider-slot is for the tray; the narrow slot is for a caddy.

The speed of a CD-ROM drive is described as a multiple of the speed ofan audio CD: '2x' means twice as fast, '8X' eight times as fast, etc.For many older Macs, an older or slower CD-ROM drive is adequate; many of these Macsdo not have the performance or features to take advantage of faster CD-ROM drives. Note:the Apple CD150 external drives (1X speed) may not provide audio via the SCSI connector to your Mac;these drives are probably best used with Compact Macs and other older Macs without extensiveaudio capabilities.

Don't be confused. The drive case has a model name; the CD-ROM drive inside has a brand and model too.

for the CD150 (1x): Sony CDU-8002, Sony CDU-541-25 caddy-based CD-ROM drives

- also Sony CDU-561-25 AKA CDU-8003 caddy-based CD-ROM drives.
for the CD600 or 600i (4X): Sony CDU-75S with an internal tray.

I have not identified every internal drive for each Apple external CD-ROM model. Sorry.

If you are upgrading a Mac with a faster CD-ROM drive, please note that System 7 onlyrecognizes a limited number of Apple drive models. CD-ROM drives such as the 8X or 12X drives were sold AFTER System 7, and so these drives may not be recognized as 'Apple' drives by System7. There are some 'aftermarket' or 'third party' software programs which allow Macs to use non-Apple drives,including packages which were sold with drives by other companies. Those software packages MAY, orMAY NOT, recognize the later Apple drives. There was an article about Apple's CD-ROM supportin 'C't Magazine' years ago; as of Sept 2005 a copy of that article is on this Web site. Here's an older Apple product: AppleCD SC model M2850 is apparently anearly Apple external CD drive. It uses the Sony CDU-8001 or 8002 drive. It requires a caddy but is older and larger than the CD150 above. I have a few of these: check ourMac collectables section for details.

External SCSI drive, 25-pin connector, no AC outlets

Check my drives sales page to see if I have any external SCSI drives with a DB-25 connector on them. Some of the oldest external SCSI drivesused that connector. Otherwise obtain an external drive with SCSI-1 connector and use a SCSI-1 to DB-25 cable to your Mac.
